The Valletta Cultural Agency has announced a €5 million investment to regenerate the City Gate Complex, one of the first landmarks to welcome people into Valletta.
All the shops and restaurants on the ground level will remain open, but their establishments are set to be modernised.
Meanwhile a multifunctional event space, multi-sensory rooms, a children’s play room and an open art gallery will be built on the first floor.
The Valletta police station will also be relocated to the City Gate Complex from its current position in Pjazza San Ġorġ.
Culture Minister Owen Bonnici said the complex had been left in a dilapidated state over the years and lost a lot of its aesthetic and social value.
“It doesn’t reflect the cultural and architectural level that one would expert at the entrance to our capital city,” he said.
“This project will transform the complex into a more lively, safe and accessible environment, complementing the regeneration works that already took place in Valletta and answering to the community’s social and cultural needs.”
The project is expected to be completed within the next two years.
