Victor Calvagna, the beloved doctor who founded and ran the children’s cancer charity Puttinu Cares passed away on Tuesday, just over a week after being hit by a car in Qawra.
On 27th December the nation was shocked to hear that the man who brought joy to so many was severely hurt, with family members taking to social media shortly after to announce that he was brain dead.
Dr Calvagna’s death was announced by Puttinu Cares on Tuesday afternoon.
“The much-loved consultant Victor Calvagna has just left this world,” it said.
Aged 63, he was a paediatric cancer specialist who “taught us who to be of service to others without expecting anything back in return."
The organisation said he was a humble man who dedicated his whole life to sick children and their families.
The police meanwhile confirmed that Dr Calvagna had passed away after he was involved in a traffic collision, and stated that that their investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Prime Minister Robert Abela said no words could measure up to the invaluable contribution Dr Calvagna passed on to those he touched.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Bernard Grech remembered him as a man of few words, who "gave his heart, life and skills to many people, not only patients".
A memorial service is expected to be announced shortly.
