Head of Cargo – Sales John Vella on Friday announced that he has left Air Malta plc after 27 years at the airline.
“The time has come to say goodbye! Time to start a new chapter in our book of life and move on to new challenges,” he said, before adding: “Who knows what is in store?”
While he described his time at Air Malta as a “rollercoaster ride”, he remarked that he is “more than grateful” for the experiences and knowledge he gained over the years, along with the “contribution and success” he managed to achieve along the way. “I am proud of all this as it forged me and made me what I am today after 27 odd years,” Mr Vella continued.
When he started working at the Maltese airline in 1995, Mr Vella was first an Insurance Executive, and was responsible for the various insurance policies pertaining Air Malta. Over time, he worked his way up the corporate ladder, serving in various other roles including Outsourcing Contract Manager and Head of Ground Services. In his most recent position as Head of Cargo – Sales, he was entrusted with the restructuring of the airline’s cargo sales department, which included outsourcing activity and contract management.
“One important lesson I learnt is not to keep prisoners or get caught in a denial curve, so it is hard, and we all have mixed feelings, emotions, and question decisions and strategy, for which we can write our own book. But we need to be courageous to move on and experience, which shows us that we will have other opportunities to shine and leave our legacy,” he explained.
He proceeded to thank his friends and colleagues for the experience, along with his mentors for their trust in him. Mr Vella also apologised to those people that he did not manage to fully understand “for whatever reason”.
“Somehow we will cross roads again,” he concluded.
Among his various achievements, Mr Vella holds an Associate’s Degree in Insurance from the Chartered Insurance Institute and a Procurement and Contracts Management course from IATA Training.
