Minister for the Economy, Silvio Schembri, has categorically denied reports suggesting that he may be stepping down as a Member of Parliament or taking up a new role such as Governor of the Central Bank of Malta.
The media reports, which surfaced on various media platforms, implied that Mr Schembri could be the next Central Bank Governor and that would see him resign as a cabinet member and could soon also vacate his parliamentary seat.
Reacting swiftly on social media, Mr Schembri dismissed the claims as “a complete fabrication,” stating that he has not held any discussions related to the Governorship of the Central Bank or any other position. He also emphasised that, even if such an offer were to be made, he is not interested.
“Let me be clear for anyone who needs it: there are no discussions for me to become Governor of the Central Bank or to take on any other role. And even if there were, I’m not interested.”
Reaffirming his current political commitment, Mr Schembri underlined that his only responsibility is that of Minister for the Economy - and he has no intention of changing that.
“My responsibility is crystal clear - that of Minister for the Economy - and that will remain the case for as long as I have your trust.”
Silvio Schembri has served as Minister for the Economy for several years and his public rebuttal comes at a time when Cabinet reshuffles and institutional appointments are the subject of political speculation.
