Couples due to marry around the upcoming general election are making last-minute adjustments, as political activity risks overlapping with one of life’s most carefully planned occasions.

Prime Minister Robert Abela called the general election on Monday, with voting day set to coincide with a number of weddings across Malta. While the logistics of the day itself present challenges, some say the aftermath may prove even more disruptive.

Speaking to WhosWho.mt, bride-to-be Wanaha Camilleri, who is set to marry on 30th May, said she has already begun adapting her plans. She explained that she will be increasing security at her venue and has instructed her DJ to make an announcement discouraging political discussion during the event.

Ms Camilleri said that suppliers have reassured her that, from their end, services will proceed as planned. However, she noted that voting could be difficult for members of the wedding party, particularly women with scheduled hair and make-up appointments, as well as for guests managing similar preparations.

“While voting day will provide hassle, the worst day would be the day after,” she said, pointing to the vote-counting process and the heightened public attention as early results begin to emerge.

Feedback from three wedding venues contacted by WhosWho.mt suggests that, although no cancellations have been reported, there has been a noticeable increase in requests for additional security measures.

Beyond venues, churches are also adjusting to the electoral calendar, with some changing confirmation times, potentially adding further complexity for families already coordinating multiple commitments.

As the election approaches, couples and service providers alike appear to be navigating a delicate balance, ensuring celebrations proceed smoothly while accounting for the broader national moment unfolding around them.
