The Maltese community in Michigan, USA, celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady – Santa Marija – last Sunday, with Ambassador-designate Marco Micallef joining to “experience firsthand the attachment the Maltese community in Detroit still has in celebrating Maltese traditions.”

The event brought together 200 attendees from the Maltese clubs in Dearborn, Detroit and Windsor at the Belle Isle Park.

With free hamburgers and hotdogs and an invitation to bring their own drinks, the community met for a slice of the Maltese festa experience in the USA.

“It was nice to see all the committees, donors and volunteers in the area joining forces and coming together to organise such a successful and well attended community event,” said Mr Micallef.

Photos of the event show Maltese emigrants and their families enjoying the occasion while sporting different types of Malta-themed apparel.

For Mr Micallef, what struck him most were the personal stories of success recounted by those he met, who built their lives away from Malta but who nonetheless retain “eagerness and enthusiasm for their families’ to maintain a strong connection to their roots.”
