A steering group for the coordination of the post-COVID strategy has been set up, and will be led by Professor Simone Borg, it was announced on Saturday.

Minister for Research, Innovation and the Co-ordination of the Post-COVID-19 Strategy, Owen Bonnici, set up the steering group to co-ordinate the development of a national post-COVID strategy.

The group’s chair, Prof Borg, has a distinguished background, holding prestigious positions in academia, including as Head of Department of the Environmental Law and Resources Law at University of Malta and as a Fellow of the Sustainability Institute in Bruges. Prof Borg is an also Expert on the European Union Expert Team for Horizon 2020.

Other members of the group will include Joyce Dimech, Mario Galea, Godwin Mifsud, James Pearsall, Gordon Sammut, Clive Tonna, and Paul Zahra

Dr Bonnici has said that the steering group is comprised a people with various competences and thanked them for accepting the positions.

According to the Government announcement, “the steering group will be governed by the principles of sustainability and long-term vision, the identification and exploitation of our comparative advantages, the strengthening of Malta’s resilience and the betterment of social inclusion and justice.”

The group will be responsible for the drafting of a post-COVID strategy for Malta, following an analysis of similar strategies in other countries.

The group’s work will be ongoing and be continuously updated, but has been instructed to present the strategy by no later than the end of the second quarter of 2021.
