Megabyte has been at the forefront of the IT industry in Malta for over 40 years, finding its roots in the 1970s at a time in which the sector was practically non-existent on the island, and today, thanks to its team of dedicated experts, continues to pave the way for the industry.

“Megabyte was one of the pioneers in kickstarting the IT revolution in Malta,” say General Managers David Micallef and Engelbert Spiteri, reflecting on the company’s inception. “Over the years, we have retained our core philosophy of offering complete IT solutions to customers spanning diverse industries.”

Backed by leading partners within the industry, the enterprising IT company has gone on to introduce several new technology offerings to the local market over the yearsIt is for this reason, the General Managers reflect, that together with bespoke solutions and the highest levels of service, that Megabyte has remained at the forefront of the IT industry for over four decades and counting.

In that time, the company has registered some impressive landmarks, with some of Megabyte’s largest projects to date including the first VAT system in Malta, together with the development of the national lottery and electoral systems, Mr Micallef reveals. “Other landmark projects include the development of Malta’s educational system and the enabling of business-critical infrastructures required to run 24/7 operations for the banking, manufacturing and shipping industries,” he continues.

And the landmarks continue to come, adds Mr Spiteri, affirming “we are currently handling the digital transformation of one of the largest institutions on the island whilst also leading a large number of businesses throughout their digital transformation journey.”

On an individual level, the co-GMs have each amassed an impressive skillset and notable experience in that time, climbing through the ranks to their current positions.

Having begun his journey at Megabyte soon after graduating with a BSc ICT Hons in Communications and Computer Engineering in 2010, Mr Micallef started his journey with the company as a Systems Engineer, progressing to Senior Systems Engineer and recently settling into his current role as General Manager of Engineering and Support Services.

My engineering background and experience in other roles within the company has enabled me to apply my skills with a clear vision as to how we can manage our operations effectively, whilst always delivering an optimal customer experience,” he maintains.

Meanwhile, after graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Internet Applications Development in 2013, Mr Spiteri’s first foray into the professional world was as a Software Developer, during which, he explains, “I gained a wealth of experience in delivering mission critical projects across various industries.”

Joining Megabyte in 2020 as Head of Software Services, he was entrusted with leading the team on both the operational and technical fronts, and a year later, was appointed General Manager of Software and Professional Services. “My main goal has been to drive the team, more specifically the Software and Professional Services business unit, forward to new heights,” he says of his role.

Turning their attention to recent years, I shift focus briefly to COVID-19 and its profound effects on businesses, forcing many to look into creative digital solutions to keep functioning.

Acknowledging this, Mr Micallef explains, “over the past two years, we have had unprecedented levels of dependency on technology and connectivity. We have seen countless businesses digitising their operations; from the rapid roll-out of e-commerce portals, increased social media presence to retain their connection with their customers, to more complex endeavors such as complete business processes being digitally transformed to facilitate higher efficiency even when most were working from home.”

Mr Spiteri agrees, adding, “throughout the tumultuous time of a global pandemic, businesses have been somewhat forced to fast-track their adoption of today’s technology, and however disruptive this sudden change has been for their operations at the time, the benefit of such developments has now already outweighed the costs and will keep on contributing for years to come.”

Indeed, one of Megabyte’s strengths is offering holistic solutions to fit different businesses’ technology requirements, making them well-placed to support businesses who have been pushed to speed up their digital innovation processes by the pandemic.

“Megabyte’s team and their expertise are geared to assist businesses in coming up to speed with the fast-moving digital world and to ensure that they can focus on their core business whilst having a reliable partner by their side to assist and guide them in implementing the appropriate technology solutions to fit their specific business requirements,” says Mr Spiteri, highlighting the heightened importance of this in recent times, where businesses have been facing their own challenges brought about by the pandemic.

“Having a technology partner to alleviate that aspect of their business has gained even more importance,” he notes.

As they move into their fifth decade, the future looks bright for the pioneering IT company, with plans to continue building on its past success. “Megabyte’s vision for the coming year is to continue assisting our long-standing customers and ensuring that all their digital requirements are addressed in a complete manner. We will continue to focus on our key strengths and areas of expertise, whilst also reaching out to niche areas within the local SME market with our growing portfolio of products and services,” Mr Micallef affirms.
