GEB Landscaping, the consortium won the contract to maintain Malta’s green spaces last year, has officially started its work, taking over from ELC, the company that operated the contract for close to 30 years.
GEB Landscaping is made up of the OZO Group of Companies, the largest private employer in the country, mainly involved in providing outsources cleaning services for the hospitality industry, and V&C Contractors Ltd, involved in construction, each with a 27.5 per cent shareholding, and Derek Garden Centre and Sicilville SRL, with a 22.5 per cent shareholding each.
OZO CEO Fabio Muscat took to LinkedIn to mark the event.
“And so it begins,” he wrote. “After a year of preparation, GEB Landscaping Ltd today will officially take over the responsibility of the upkeep and development of public gardens, streets and roundabouts and many more green spaces around the Maltese Islands.”
Mr Muscat thanked the employees who joined GEB “for this exciting journey”, saying that together, they “will continue making Malta a beautiful place to call home, and a favourite tourist destination for years to come”.
Most of ELC’s employees shifted their employment over to GEB.
The five-year contract is worth €33.5 million, lower than the estimated €41 million estimated by the Department of Contracts.
Mr Muscat said that the consortium is “committed to make Malta and Gozo a better place for its citizens and for the millions of tourists who choose to visit the islands”.
He added that GEB Landscaping would also like to thank Malta Environment Landscaping Projects “MELP” and Ambjent Malta for their continuous support through the transition period.
