Maltese composer, conductor and music teacher Mro Lawrence Borg passed away on Thursday (22nd October), aged 88.
Born in Cospicua on 18th August 1938, Mro Borg began studying music at the age of 13 with the Soċjetà Filarmonika Fra Antoine De Paule Banda Kristu Re in Paola, under the guidance of Francesco Busuttil.
He later pursued studies in music theory, harmony, orchestration and composition under several prominent Maltese musicians, including Joseph Abela Scolaro, Charles E. Zammit and Carmelo Pace, obtaining a diploma in composition.
Throughout his career, Mro Borg served as musical director of the Banda de Rohan between 1978 and 1990 and as bandmaster of the St Joseph Band Club in Ħamrun between 1984 and 1991.
His compositions included orchestral works, sacred hymns, symphonic marches and musical arrangements for soloists and bands.
Tributes have since poured in, with conductor, pianist and teacher Mariella Spiteri Cefai remembering him as a mentor who shaped both her musical career and personal life.
"He was the one who taught me the fundamental principles of harmony, laying the foundations of my musical journey," she wrote.
She recalled watching him compose harmonic, choral and contrapuntal works with apparent ease, describing how his hands, worn from years of manual labour, worked their magic on the stave.
"But Mro Borg was so much more than a teacher. He was a mentor who guided me through my diploma examinations and, just as importantly, through life itself."
She also remembered his kindness, particularly how he would never allow her to leave his home empty-handed after travelling from Gozo for lessons.
"Dear Lorry, thank you for your wisdom, your kindness, your guidance, and all those little gestures that meant so much. You have left a lasting mark on my life, both musically and personally, and I will carry your memory with me always."
Mro Borg is survived by his wife Mary and their three children Paul, John Ivan, and Mike.
His funeral will take place on Saturday 24th October at the Ħamrun Parish Church.
