93 year old retired surgeon John Baptist Pace was awarded the Nazzareno Vassallo Award 2026 during a ceremony held at San Anton Palace under the distinguished patronage of President Myriam Spiteri Debono.

Organised jointly by CareMalta Group and Vassallo Group, the Nazzareno Vassallo Award recognises individuals and organisations whose dedication and initiatives enhance the wellbeing and quality of life of older persons.

This year's edition coincides with the 80th anniversary of Vassallo Group. The first edition of the award was held in 1998, five years after the establishment of CareMalta Group.

Mr Pace, Gozo's first surgeon, was recognised for his longstanding contribution to healthcare and community service in Gozo. In 1988, he founded the voluntary organisation Friends of the Sick and the Elderly in Gozo, which has supported numerous vulnerable individuals and older persons over the years. Nearly four decades later, he continues to play an active role within the organisation.

The selection board, chaired by former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, included Charlo Bonnici, Alexei Sammut, Rosette Bonello and Alexander Schembri.

In his report, Dr Gonzi highlighted Mr Pace’s continued commitment to community service following his retirement, noting that the organisation he founded has supported dozens of families and distributed medical equipment to improve the quality of life of older persons and patients across Gozo.

He also emphasised Mr Pace’s longstanding belief that older persons should remain in their own homes for as long as possible, preserving their dignity and independence. Now aged 93, Mr Pace remains actively involved in the organisation’s work, serving as an inspiring example of active ageing.

During the ceremony, addresses were delivered by President Myriam Spiteri Debono, Vassallo Group Chairperson Natalie Briffa Farrugia and CareMalta Group CEO, James Sciriha.

The other nominees for this year’s NV Award were Publio Agius, Julie Amanda Rasher, John Boxall, Cettina Falzon, Charles Seychell, Romina Vella, and The Malta Rabbit Club.
