Plans to significantly expand Manchester’s Stock Exchange Hotel – co-owned by former Manchester United players Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs alongside Maltese hotelier Winston Zahra – have been approved by Manchester City Council.

The development will see the conversion of the nearby Norfolk House office block on Norfolk Street into a 95-bedroom luxury hotel and spa, operating as an extension to the existing Grade II-listed Stock Exchange Hotel. The project will more than triple the hotel’s room capacity and introduce new leisure and hospitality facilities.

The 54,127 sq ft building, constructed in 1997, will house 95 new guest rooms across four floors, comprising three suite categories. Approved plans also include a gym and spa, a resident lounge known as the Traders Lounge, and a restaurant and bar open to the public.

A number of external modifications have also been approved, including replaced windows, new window planters, and the staining of the building’s existing red brickwork to a darker shade. A redesigned front entrance is also planned to create a more prominent guest arrival point.

Winston Zahra, co-owner of the Stock Exchange and founder of Troo Hospitality, welcomed the council’s decision.

“We are thrilled that planning approval has been granted for Stock Exchange Suites. This development represents an exciting new chapter for us –  expanding what we already do so well while staying true to the character, heritage and intimacy that define the hotel,” he said.

The Norfolk House building is currently largely vacant, with two short-term tenants – NHS Blood Donation and Caval – expected to relocate ahead of redevelopment. The proposals include the retention of the two storey car park which lies beneath the building and offers much needed parking in the prime city centre location of the property.

The Stock Exchange Hotel has built a strong reputation as one of Manchester’s most exclusive places to stay, attracting international performers and high-profile guests including Mike Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna and the Gallagher brothers. Earlier this year, it was named among The Times’ 100 best places to stay in the UK.
