At a time when maritime trade continues to power the global economy, the launch of a brand new joint Master's degree in Port Management and Logistics (MIPMAL) feels not only timely but deeply necessary. And Malta, a key hub in the Mediterranean, is right at the heart of it.
Supported by Malta Freeport Terminals, this two-year course is the result of a dynamic collaboration between five coastal universities: the University of Cádiz in Spain (which is leading the consortium), the University of Malta, the University of Split in Croatia, the University of Gdańsk in Poland, and the University of Algarve in Portugal.
MIPMAL offers an immersive, pan-European experience that promises to equip students with the high-level knowledge and practical know-how to shape the future of port operations, logistics, and sustainable maritime development.
Given its geographical position and long-standing maritime legacy, Malta's involvement in this course makes perfect sense. Students will spend their second-year first semester at the University of Malta, tapping into the country's expertise in maritime law, trade, and port digitalisation. With the industry’s growing focus on digital transformation and sustainability, this leg of the programme is expected to be pivotal in shaping students’ understanding of where the sector is headed.
MIPMAL covers a wide spectrum of relevant topics, from terminal design and cargo handling technology to port law and digital systems. It’s designed for those who want more than just a theoretical understanding of the sector, they want to roll up their sleeves and gain real-world insight through hands-on experience.
Indeed, students will be offered internship opportunities, and those already in the industry or unable to commit to a full Master’s can still benefit through micro-credentials. Each of these five-credit units is delivered over an intensive two-week period, allowing professionals to deepen their knowledge without pressing pause on their careers.
Whether you're aiming for an industrial track with hands-on internships or leaning more towards a research-focused path, MIPMAL offers the flexibility to choose. It’s also fully taught in English.
For those ready to take the plunge, applications for the first cohort, starting September, are now open.
