Postgraduate students from King’s College London and the University of Malta are being invited to pitch sustainable business ideas in a newly launched international competition aimed at developing ventures that make a positive impact in both Malta and the UK.
The MBN International Entrepreneurship Prize – organised by the Malta Business Network (MBN) in collaboration with King’s College London and the University of Malta – is a virtual challenge focused on encouraging innovation aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The competition is open exclusively to students reading for the MSc Strategic Entrepreneurship & Innovation at King’s College and the MEnt in Knowledge-Based Entrepreneurship at the University of Malta. Participants will work in cross-border teams to create business ideas that are not only viable but also geared towards solving global issues.
While the initiative offers a modest £3,000 prize fund, including a £500 People’s Choice Award sponsored by BNF Bank, organisers say the main draw for students is the chance to work closely with mentors and business professionals from both countries.
“The initiative is about spotlighting young talent with the potential to shape the future of business and sustainability,” said David Walsh, who is coordinating the programme on behalf of the MBN. “We hope to inspire viable startups that make a difference.”
Participants will have access to guidance from a network of mentors including Corinne Montefort, Jamie Moore, Katrina Attard, Nick Xuereb, George Amato, and Biju Menon. The panel of judges – Deborah Webster, Chris Curmi, and Sarah Grech – will assess entries based on potential for impact and quality of innovation.
The challenge takes place in a non-assessed environment, giving students the freedom to experiment with ideas and develop their entrepreneurial skillsets without the pressure of academic grading.
Founded in 2011 at the Malta High Commission in London, the Malta Business Network has grown into a community of nearly 400 professionals with chapters in both Malta and the UK. It regularly organises panel discussions and events that foster business collaboration across borders.
