Malta is being represented at the prestigious International Beer Cup for the first time, with Lord Chambray founder Samuele D’Imperio serving as a judge.

He joins master brewers from some 25 other countries who will together appraise more than 1,300 beers from breweries across the globe.

The International Beer Cup, currently being held in Hokkaido, Japan, is widely recognised as one of the most prestigious beer competitions in the world.

Last year, 78 judges from 24 countries and regions evaluated more than 1,200 beers of various beer styles by brewers from around the globe.

Beers of more than 100 different styles compete to be awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals across 12 categories.

Commenting at the start of the competition, Mr D’Imperio said that it is an honour to represent Malta for the first time in its history at such an important beer competition.

“We are committed to putting Malta on the brewing map. This is something Lord Chambray has worked hard to achieve and which we believe can be hugely beneficial for the country,” he continued.

Last year, Mr D’Imperio also represented Malta at the similarly named World Beer Cup, which is held in the US.The World Beer Cup is referred to as the Olympics of Beer, in the brewing community and brings together the finest beer makers from around the world.

Brewing out of Xewkija, Gozo, Lord Chambray was the first craft brewery set up on the Maltese islands when it opened its doors in 2014.

Since then, it has won more than a dozen international awards and collaborated with leading breweries from around Europe.

Mr D’Imperio has a Degree in Economics with a Master’s in Business Administration and Management from the University of Eastern Piedmont, Italy.

Although originally from Italy, he has been visiting Malta alongside his family for the past 30 years and has called the sister isle home for more than a decade.
