Las Palmas Gourmet Beach Bar has denied involvement in a violent incident that left a woman injured outside its Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq premises last month, insisting the altercation took place between third parties with no connection to the restaurant.

Published footage showed a man repeatedly striking a woman as she lay on the ground, after an argument escalated over outdoor furniture allegedly blocking a pathway next to the establishment.

In a statement issued on its social channels, the restaurant clarified that its staff had no part in the altercation.

“While reports have been circulating in local media regarding an altercation that took place close to our premises, it must be clarified that the incident being referred to took place between third parties who in no manner have or had any connection with the operation of the establishment in close proximity of which the altercation took place. No member of staff of the establishment was involved in the incident and, in this regard, the management completely disassociates itself from the incident,” the statement read.

Las Palmas also rejected claims that its furniture had obstructed a public passageway. “Although it has been alleged that furniture was blocking a pathway, this is not the case as the establishment is operated in terms of the relative licences and authorisations granted by the competent authorities and in an open and public manner.”

The incident, which occurred on 16th July, left Caroline Magro with a black eye, facial scratches, and multiple bruises. She filed a police report, as did the man filmed assaulting her, identified as John Portelli.

Las Palmas reiterated that it does not tolerate violent behaviour. “The management of the establishment does not tolerate violence on its premises and does not condone any violent behaviour, and is cooperating with the police on this matter.”
