Kurt Farrugia has been confirmed as the new CEO of Transport Malta (TM).

Last month, there were reports that he was expected to take on the top position at TM, an agency which has been in the hot seat over the years due to its status as regulator of all modes of transport in Malta.

Mr Farrugia’s appointment was made official on Friday (today) through a statement from the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works. He will assume the role on 12th August 2024.

He has been appointed to the position after previous CEO, Colonel Mark Mallia, vacated the position after he was named Head of Government Secretariat under the current Robert Abela Administration.

Transport Minister Chris Bonett thanked Dr Mallia for his time at the authority, while also welcoming Mr Farrugia to the position.

Prior to his newest role, Mr Farrugia served as CEO at Malta Enterprise for the past five years. During that time, Malta Enterprise was tasked with leading the economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the management of a number of schemes. He was also key to Malta attracting substantial foreign investment.

Mr Farrugia also previously served as Head of Government Communications in the Joseph Muscat administration, as well as a Member of the Board of Governors at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST).

TM’s aim is to promote and develop the transport sector in Malta through proper regulation and promotion and development of related services, businesses and other interests both locally and internationally. However, it has been subject to constant criticism from the public, particularly for mismanagement, as the nation’s traffic situation continues to worsen.
