The Office of the Prime Minister has announced that Colonel Mark Mallia will take over as its Chief of Staff, taking over from Glenn Micallef.

Col. Mallia is currently CEO at Transport Malta, a role he was appointed to just months ago, in February 2024.

He had previously served as CEO at Identità for two years, following a 25-year career in the Maltese Armed Forces.

During his long service, Col. Mallia held the role of Deputy Commander and Head of Human Resources Management, and previously served as Senior Aide de Camp to the President of Malta.

He also holds a Masters in Advocacy and an Executive MBA.

The announcement comes hot on the heels of a major electoral setback for the governing Labour Party, and follows the exit of its Deputy Leader two weeks ago.

In a statement, Prime Minister Roberta Abela thanked Mr Micallef, who had held the top job since November 2020, for his “tireless work that achieved positive results for our country.”

Dr Abela specifically mentioned Mr Micallef’s role in negotiating Malta’s largest packet of EU funds, the fruit of which “Malta will continue experiencing in projects and initiatives that improve the Maltese and Gozitan peoples’ quality of life.”
