ARD Discount is a joint venture between retailers Ergon and Maiora and operates more than 230 outlets in Central and Southern Italy. Furthemore, it also has a 40,000 square metre distribution centre.
The brand has a varied range of products including organic, gluten and lactose-free and vegan products.
Some of its brands include Sicilsole, Tesori del Cuoco, Buono and Gusto, Frutti di Frutta and Prima Scelta, among others. The store, like others on the island, also features its own products at a lower price.
ARD Discount joins the ever-growing lineup of discount stores and supermarkets across the island. In recent years, various popular Italian discount stores popped up locally, including Eurospin and Risparmio Casa.
Back in March, WhosWho.mt spoke to economist and consultant at E-Cubed consultants Ltd Victoria Mintoff Apap, and asked about possible implications of another discount store entry to the market.
At the time, Ms Mintoff Apap noted that while new additions reflect increased consumer choices and competitive pricing, it triggered concerns.
She noted that “the substantial importation by discount stores could negatively impact Malta’s agricultural sector, which is already grappling with cost and other resource challenges.”
