George Marius Hyzler has been elected Dean of Chamber III at the European Court of Auditors, marking a new leadership role for the Maltese member within one of the EU’s key institutions.

Chamber III is responsible for audits covering EU external action, as well as security and justice. Its remit extends beyond the European Union, overseeing programmes and funding implemented by the European Commission across some 150 beneficiary countries spanning Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific.

Announcing his appointment, Dr Hyzler expressed gratitude to his fellow members for their support. “I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the members of Chamber III - Bettina Jakobsen, Laima Andrikienė, Nikolaos Milionis, and Marek Opioła - for their trust and support,” he said, adding that he looks forward to continuing the Court’s work in collaboration with colleagues.

Dr Hyzler has been a Member of the European Court of Auditors since October 2022. Prior to this, he served as Malta’s Commissioner for Standards in Public Life between 2018 and 2022, a role in which he was closely associated with strengthening standards in governance and public accountability.

A lawyer by profession, he obtained his warrant to practise as an advocate in Malta in 1980.

His election as Dean places him at the helm of a chamber that plays a central role in scrutinising how EU funds are used beyond its borders, particularly in areas tied to international cooperation, security, and institutional frameworks.
