The James Caterers group of companies is in advanced negotiations to purchase a private Maltese hospital, WhosWho.mt understands.
While negotiations are still underway, it is believed that a deal could be struck in the coming weeks.
The group of companies, founded and chaired by James Barbara, is best known as the business behind James Caterers, one of Malta’s leading wedding and event caterers.
It also produces the gluten-free line of products GlutX and the low-calorie microwaveable meals Waistnot.
Its healthcare catering business has provided a foothold in what it increasingly sees as a vector for growth.
Earlier this year, it acquired full ownership of Malta Healthcare Caterers Ltd from db Group, its former partners in the venture, for an estimated €34.5 million.
The group had previously entered the care home management space in 2017, when it won a bid, alongside db Group, to construct, manage and provide catering for a 504-bed extension to the state-owned St Vincent de Paul residence.
Malta Healthcare Caterers Ltd also owns Healthmark, which trains and supplies nurses and carers.
The group's acquisition of a private hospital would mark a significant step in its expansion into the healthcare sector.
