Ena Cremona, the first Maltese woman to actively practise in court, has died at the age of 88.

Dr Cremona, who passed away on Friday, was born in 1936 and graduated as a lawyer from University of Malta in 1958. She was only the second woman to graduate as a lawyer from the university.

Once Malta became part of the European Union (EU) in 2004, she also became Malta’s first female judge to the General Court of the European Union, then known as the Court of First Instance. She had been reappointed to serve for another six-year team in 2007, yet in 2011 she handed in her resignation.

She was Legal Advisor to the National Council of Women from 1964 to 1979 as well as a Member of the Public Service Commission from 1987 to 1989. Dr Cremona also served on the Board of Directors of Lombard Bank (Malta) Ltd, as well as a Member of the Electoral Commission.

Her funeral will take place on Monday 3rd June at 9.30am at Stella Maris Church, Sliema.
