As the year draws to a close, many consider this period ideal for snapping up special offers and discounted prices, however, the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) has issued a timely reminder, urging consumers to exercise caution when bargain hunting to avoid falling victim to scams.

The MCA highlighted that while the excitement of securing a great deal can be exhilarating, it also leaves individuals more vulnerable to deception.

Scammers often exploit this time of year as a golden opportunity to mislead consumers. Offers that appear "too good to be true" often turn out to be precisely that– a scam.

The authority warned against offers promising significant returns for minimal effort or products and services advertised at incredibly low prices. Such deals are typically designed to entice unwary shoppers into parting with their money or personal information.

To avoid becoming a victim, the MCA advised being particularly cautious around offers that demand immediate action, often presented as urgent or time-limited opportunities.
