The Argotti Botanic Gardens & Resource Centre has announced the appointment of Christian Borg as its new curator, marking the beginning of what it describes as “a new and exciting chapter” in its long history.

Mr Borg succeeds former curator Tony Meli, who has been thanked for his work and dedication during his tenure. The gardens expressed their gratitude to Mr Meli for the legacy he leaves behind and wished him success in his future endeavours.

Mr Borg brings with him over a decade of experience at the gardens, having served as a Technical Officer for almost 12 years. His work has centred on botanic conservation, and the institution noted that his “innovative approach and fresh perspective” are expected to contribute positively to the development of its collections and programmes.

Founded in the 18th century, Argotti Botanic Gardens is the Commonwealth’s third oldest botanical garden. Today, it maintains the national herbarium and a diverse botanical collection that includes a Mediterranean section.

The gardens also play a role in education and research through collaborations with several University of Malta departments, including Biology, Conservation and Built Heritage, Architecture and Urban Design, and the Institute of Earth Systems. Research projects have focused on plant conservation, ecology, and bioactive plant extracts, while the site continues to serve as an open classroom for primary and secondary school students.
