Leonardo Barcenas Jr, a Malta-based chef who worked at a number of Asian restaurants, has passed away aged 44 after battling with cancer.

Hailing from the Philippines, Chef Barcenas spent several years at KuYa and was only recently appointed Head Chef at Pinoy Street Food.

KuYa honoured him as a chef who “has been at the heart of our kitchen for the past six years and who we’ve been missing for some time now”.

“His dedication, passion and tireless work shaped not only our dishes, but our entire team,” the restaurant said.

“He was a true leader – respected, admired and loved by everyone who had the privilege to work alongside him. He stood with us through some of our proudest moments, including earning our Michelin recognition, and his influence will forever remain a part of who we are.”

“Beyond his talent, he will be remembered for his kindness, his strength, and the way he brought people together. We are deeply grateful for the time we shared with him, and he will be profoundly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

Pinoy Street Food described Chef Barrens as a “dear friend, colleague, mentor and brother”.

“Through the years Leo has been instrumental in the growth of our establishments and was much loved for his warmth, creativity and generosity,” it said.

“He was always there to help and to share his knowledge with anyone and left a lasting impact on all of us. RIP Kuya Leo, we will continue to do our best to make you proud, please watch over us!”
