A sandwich shop in Malta has won the admiration of locals for its commitment to using the Maltese language on its branding, proving that a small touch can make a big impact.

A member of the popular local Facebook group Are You Being Served? recently highlighted Panina’s efforts, sharing photos of its packaging, which proudly features Maltese text.

"It’s not something extraordinary, right?" the man wrote. "Let’s remember that we are Maltese, and we have our own language. I’m pleased to see something like this. Let’s not forget Maltese, because it’s part of what makes us who we are, and unfortunately, we’re slowly losing it. Sometimes you go to another country, and they only use their language. I don’t want that – I want English to be used too, so that everyone can understand. But just as I want English to be used, I don’t want Maltese to be forgotten."

His post struck a chord with many in the comments, who echoed his sentiments and praised Panina for embracing the national language. Some expressed concern that Maltese is gradually fading from everyday use, making gestures like this all the more meaningful.

Some of the phrases featured on Panina’s products include aħħħ, kemm hu tajjeb!, meaning “It tastes so good!”, and aħħħ, x’ġuħ għandi!, meaning “I’m so hungry!”.
