Ten years ago, Yachting Malta set sail with a clear mandate: to put Malta firmly on the international yachting map. A decade on, the journey has been one of transformation, collaboration, and sustained ambition – evolving from a promotional platform into the very backbone of a thriving maritime economy.

When Yachting Malta was established, the immediate focus was on visibility. Malta had the geography, the history, and the natural harbours – what it needed was a unified voice to communicate its potential to the world.

Early efforts centred on attracting high-profile sailing events and regattas, using competitive sport as a gateway to a global audience of enthusiasts, charter operators, and superyacht owners. Those events delivered exactly what was intended: footfall, media coverage, and a growing awareness that Malta was not merely a transit port but a genuine yachting destination.

But ambition rarely stands still. Hosting spectacular events creates moments; building an industry creates lasting value. Yachting Malta made a deliberate strategic shift – one that would define the second chapter of its story.

Building the ecosystem

That shift has been underpinned by Government vision. Malta’s authorities recognised yachting not as a leisure footnote but as a serious economic pillar – generating employment, stimulating investment, and anchoring high-value tourism.

Strong institutional relationships followed. Transport Malta has been instrumental in streamlining the regulatory frameworks governing yachts in Maltese waters, while the Malta Ship Registry – one of the largest and most respected in the world – has reinforced Malta’s standing as a flag state of choice.

The Malta Superyacht Industry Network has brought the private sector into the fold, uniting marinas, refit yards, crew agencies, legal firms, and hospitality providers under a shared agenda. Through Visit Malta, the leisure and economic narratives have remained inseparable: every superyacht that spends a season here is also a travelling ambassador for the islands.

Relationships mean little without international exposure. Yachting Malta has invested consistently in taking Malta's message to where the yachting world gathers.

Boot Düsseldorf has opened doors to the Northern European market; the Palma International Boat Show places Malta at the heart of the Western Mediterranean conversation; the Cannes Yachting Festival provides a platform at the very top of the superyacht world; the Dubai International Boat Show extends Malta's reach into the Gulf and the growing network of Middle Eastern owners and investors; and the Monaco Yacht Show – the most prestigious gathering in the global yachting calendar – ensures Malta is seen and heard among the industry's most influential decision-makers.

The Malta Boat Show: A flagship of our own

Perhaps nothing illustrates Yachting Malta's growth better than its stewardship of the Malta Boat Show. The event has a history that predates the organisation, but Yachting Malta has taken the reins decisively, elevating it into a platform with genuine international reach and ambition.

The Malta Boat Show was born from the conviction that a serious yachting nation needs a world-class showcase on home waters. The first two editions exceeded expectations, drawing industry professionals, buyers, media, and the public in numbers that confirmed the appetite was real.

Now the third edition prepares to take centre stage — from 29th October to 1st November, returning with the finest vessels, the most respected industry names, and the energy of a community that has grown measurably stronger.

It is the jewel in Yachting Malta’s crown: industry pride, commercial opportunity, and proof that Malta’s yachting story is still very much in full sail.

Sailing for everyone: Inclusion and sustainability

A broader industry is a stronger one. The delivery of Hansa 303 adaptive sailing boats to local clubs has opened sailing to people who might otherwise never have had the opportunity – a meaningful commitment to the idea that sailing belongs to everyone.

Alongside this, Yachting Malta developed sustainability guidelines tailored to Maltese sailing clubs and marinas. The response has been encouraging: several clubs have formally adopted them, and a number have gone further, using them as a foundation for their own bespoke frameworks. It is the kind of grassroots momentum that can only be earned through trust and leading by example.

“Ten years. Several chapters. One unwavering direction. The foundations are solid, the partnerships are strong, and the horizon has never looked more promising. Here’s to the next decade.” — Michael Mifsud, CEO, Yachting Malta Ltd.
