Since his appointment as CEO of St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation in 2022, Tonio Mallia have worked to reimagine the Cathedral as a dynamic cultural, liturgical and heritage landmark.

With over 20 years of executive experience in the public and private sector, healthcare, education, and business development, he brings a results-driven, people-focused leadership style that has helped elevate the Foundation to new heights.

“During my tenure, we have made major strides in human resources,” says Mr Mallia. “This includes the implementation of structured policies and the strengthening of our organisational culture. I place people at the core of the Foundation’s success, fostering a work environment that values excellence, enthusiasm, and empowerment.”

Mr Mallia has also spearheaded significant infrastructure enhancements, ensuring the Cathedral’s spaces meet modern standards while remaining faithful to its religious and historical legacy. His commitment to conservation has driven the careful restoration of artworks and architectural elements within the Co-Cathedral. More recently, this commitment has expanded to sharing conservation-restoration resources with other entities across the island, reflecting his broader vision of cross-sector collaboration and cultural stewardship.

“As a passionate advocate for continuous improvement, I have been at the forefront of the new Museum project,” he shares. “With the construction now completed, we are moving into the final phases of the initiative. Guiding such a complex project has required both leadership and experience to ensure that the Museum not only meets world-class standards but also enriches the liturgival, cultural, educational, and visitor experience at St John’s Co-Cathedral.”

Before joining the Foundation, Mr Abela served as Director of Procurement & Contracts at the University of Malta (2010–2022) and previously held senior roles in healthcare logistics, elderly care, and business consulting. His academic background includes an MSc in Health Services Management and a Diploma in Business and Administration, alongside leadership and management certifications from the University of Malta and Henley Management College.

“With a clear vision and unwavering dedication, I continue to lead St John’s Co-Cathedral into a new era,” he expounds, “one where tradition, innovation, and public service converge to create a truly world-class institution.”
