The following was penned by Malta Communications Authority CEO Jesmond Bugeja
Technology and telecoms, ways of exploiting them to improve society’s quality of life and designing a better future for it, together with understanding people, have always been at the forefront of my professional drives.
I am proud to have started my career at the very bottom of the industry food chain as a technical apprentice with the then national telecommunications operator, Telemalta Corporation, which was an invaluable pediment for me.
My technical background served me as a stepping stone to venture outside the country and grow further with Ericsson AB in Stockholm, Sweden, where I progressed to hold various operational and managerial roles.
Back in Malta, I then held senior executive management roles across diverse industries including ICT, telecommunications and identity management and all the while continued to acquire an even stronger background in telecommunications network management and policy development.
Among other posts I occupied, I was Group IT Manager for Gollcher Group and headed the Passport Office in Malta, in exciting times of big changes and improvements.
All posts I occupied posed big challenges at the time but I look back on each with great pride as territory conquered and with immense gratitude for all the personal and professional growth they offered.
Working in the said industries in such a diverse manner for over 30 years, coupled with the academic qualifications I hold that range from a Master’s Degree in Leadership and Management (University of South Wales), to a post-graduate diploma in Digital Marketing, a certification in Prince 2 Project Management Professional and a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, together with a sound positive can-do attitude, enabled me to take on the next and bigger challenge on the horizon.
Today, as the Chief Executive Officer and acting Chairman, I proudly head the highly specialised team at the Malta Communications Authority, the Maltese regulatory authority for electronic communications, eCommerce in particular web accessibility, and postal services. I also represent Malta as a board member in the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) by which member states I have been elected and am currently serving as Mini Board Vice-Chairperson for 2021.
Sailing, boats and the great mighty sea are my personal passions in life, which have always inspired me in many ways.
I believe that there are many life values to be learnt both from the discipline of sailing and from dealing with such a force of nature like the sea. One I hold particularly at heart and that has become pretty much my credo in management is that, when required, all hands need to be on deck and that each set of hands, no matter how polished or humble, holds its unique importance and value - teamwork is key. Another thing that fascinates me is the horizon, it is a moving target and so is life!
