When Ivan Mifsud took over from his father, he concentrated on specialising in the premium, luxury and expedition cruise/yachting sector.

“We soon expanded to Libya, followed by Algeria and the island of Gozo, operating out of 14 south Mediterranean ports. A boutique Meetings, Incentive, Conference and Event (MICE) Department was set up to deliver creative and experiential destination management services to clients,” he explains.

Mr Mifsud is the Honorary Consul for South Africa and represents Messe Berlin in Malta.

The company was originally set up in 1860 under the name C & G Fratelli Mifsud by Mr Mifsud’s great, great, grandfather, its core function being that of attending vessels entering the Grand Harbour. In 1933, it was found necessary to change its name to Mifsud Brothers Ltd.

The 1945-50 period was a memorable one in the history of Mifsud Brothers as it was the time when the company, headed by Mr Mifsud’s grandfather, Paul, was appointed general agents for Cunard White Star Passenger Line, Cunard Steam Cargo Line as well as Swan Hellenic. This was to be springboard to the company’s growth in the cruise sector as well as in the shipping business.

In the 1960s, when tourism started to sprout in Malta with the advent of commercial aircraft, Mifsud Brothers diversified into the hotel business and, later, in destination management.
