Many admirers of Café Prego were saddened to learn of the Valletta institution’s closure via a recent social media post.

“It is with sadness that we share the news that this café in Valletta has closed its doors for the last time,” begins the post, making reference to the much-loved Café Prego, which dates back to 1946 and still features décor from the 1960s.

Noting its humble beginning in 1946, when it is said that owner Salvatore Bezzina brought one of the first coffee machines into Valletta, the post recognises how “everyone who visits Valletta is sure to be familiar with the way in which the family ran the café.”

“From our hearts we thank them for their service to the community. We will never forget Café Prego,” it concludes.

Located on the steep streets on the northwest side of Valletta, the café served as a time capsule to many, and will certainly be missed.
