Malta-based architecture studio Studjurban is celebrating the 10th anniversary since it was launched in 2012 by architect Antoine Zammit.

“For the past few years, Malta has been going through a building frenzy. While at Studjurban, we could have easily been part of it, we consciously chose not to because it is a situation that we do not want to be part of,” Perit Zammit said. Instead of this, it has opted to promote “responsible architecture, driven by thorough research, and guided by a love for urban design”.

“At Studjurban, we study our urban context, and seek to make sure that our projects improve such context. This I believe, must be the responsibility of all architects, urban designers, and urban policy makers,” he added.

Perit Zammit said that his dream was always to establish an office that could dedicate itself to urban design. Today, he leads a small and dedicated team of young professionals, with one third of the studio’s work concerning urban design, particularly public spaces, strategies for localities, large-scale master planning, stakeholder interface, resident and Local Council consultations, urban design research projects, and policy making.

“We steer away from soulless apartment blocks and complexes because they do not appeal to my vision for Studjurban. So, we choose to not get involved. This is why I look at Studjurban as my opportunity to focus on my urban design work. Most importantly, Studjurban allows us to work on projects we truly believe in,” he continued.

To celebrate the 10-year milestone, Studjurban, which prior to the pandemic had organised Architecture Alive, a series of design talks by world-renowned architects to promote better design, is launching a newly revamped anniversary logo.

While the logo retains the qualities of the original logo, the SU letters representing the firm’s name have been reinterpreted to become more recognisable, with their ends extended outwards towards the edge of the orange circular motif that encloses them.

“Today, 10 years down the line, we know better who we are and what we stand for and our vision is clearer. So, whilst we remain true to our roots and values, we want to keep pushing our boundaries through more research and growth. This, in essence, is what our brand’s logo represents,” Perit Zammit added.

“This rebrand exercise helped us stop to take a deeper look at who we are and what we stand for. I feel that this new logo celebrates our identity, embedded in a commitment to the research we do, and which is a very strong part of our raison d'être. At Studjurban in fact, we are defined by the research we do of every project’s context. Ultimately, architecture is also about understanding a project’s surroundings and reinterpreting that space,” he concluded.

Apart from his role at Studjurban, Perit Zammit is also a Senior Lecturer at University of Malta’s Faculty for the Built Environment, specialising in spatial planning, urban design, and urban governance.
