Thomas Cordina and his son Mark have been named the winners of the 2026 VBL Spirit of Valletta Award for their restored 1950 Fiat Topolino during this year's Valletta Concours d’Elegance.
The award was presented as part of the Valletta Concours d’Elegance, Malta’s annual event celebrating vintage and classic cars and motorcycles, which took place in Valletta on 24th May.

Sponsored by VBL Group, the VBL Spirit of Valletta Award recognises vehicles that demonstrate a strong connection to Valletta’s heritage and identity, in addition to their historical and mechanical significance.
The winning Fiat Topolino has been part of the Cordina family for nearly five decades. According to the family, the vehicle was purchased by Thomas Cordina’s father in 1976 after it was discovered abandoned in a valley in a deteriorated condition.
The restoration project began in 2018, with the family working to preserve the vehicle’s original features. The Fiat Topolino still retains its factory engine and original chassis, with the engine number matching factory records from the year it was produced.
Speaking about the restoration, Mr Cordina said the process required patience and care due to the vehicle’s age and historical significance. He added that the car’s authenticity makes it particularly special.
The Valletta Concours d’Elegance has developed into an internationally recognised event, attracting classic and vintage vehicles from Malta and abroad. The annual gathering combines automotive heritage with the historic setting of Malta’s capital city.
Commenting on the award, VBL Group CEO Dr Andrei Imbroll said the Fiat Topolino reflects the principles of preservation and restoration that the company seeks to promote through its work in Valletta.
VBL Group supports the Valletta Concours d’Elegance through its sponsorship of the award, which aims to celebrate both automotive heritage and the cultural identity of the capital.
