The bakery, an integral part of the Gozitan town’s community for years, has closed its doors for the final time, a sign on its exterior read.
“We would like to thank you for the faith and appreciation you have shown towards our bread over the years,” the sign stated.
Francesco Cauchi, one of the bakers, took to social media to make the announcement, saying: “And the door is closed one final time. Tax-Xiber Bakery’s workers would like to thank you all for your support throughout the years.”
“This is the end of Tax-Xiber Bakery,” he added.

His post was also accompanied by a video showing what appears to be the bakery’s final customer being served, before the doors are closed for good.
According to an interview by The People of Malta from back in 2016, Tax-Xiber Bakery had been open for more than a century, with the grandparents of the current generation starting it all.
Many expressed their sadness at the news on social media, before wishing the bakers well for their retirement, stating that the bakery will be “missed by many.”
Simona Refalo, a Labour Party candidate for the Xewkija Local Council, recalled how she used to go to the bakery with her grandmother, highlighting the care the bakers would give towards serving their customers. “Unfortunately, today marks a sad day as Xewkija has lost one of the final two bakeries remaining in the town: Tax-Xiber Bakery. Thank you for the service you have provided to the town. Determined workers with genuine products that will never be forgotten,” she said.
