Santa Marija is notorious for Maltese people taking the time to unwind with family and friends on Malta's sister island, Gozo. A recent report on the Times of Malta shows that, although many flocked to the island, spending revenue in restaurants was down when compared to the number of travellers.
Tourism bodies attributed this phenomenon to inflation and increased competition in the market. Speaking to Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) President Tony Zahra, he told WhosWho.mt that when it comes to Malta, the problem is not that locals aren’t going to restaurants. “The problem lies in the spending power.”
Mr Zahra said that, based on his assessment and interactions with various establishments, it seems as though the average spend per person has decreased. However, he notes that other ‘sun destinations’ have noticed the same pattern and assures that it extends beyond Malta's islands.
“Colleagues abroad are seeing this happen generally, throughout different economies,” Mr Zahra added.
Asked about the measures that need to be taken by restauranteurs, he notes that a crucial part in a restaurant’s operation is how the product is presented to its client. “Let’s take into an account fresh fish. The server needs to have the right skills to sell the dish. If the people employed are not competent enough or do not communicate effectively, then the business will take a hit,” Mr Zahra explained.
On the other hand, he notes with the right strategies, competent restaurants have a good opportunity to increase the average spend of locals.
