Roberta Metsola is emerging as a favourite to be chosen for a second term as the President of the European Parliament (EP), reports state.

Dr Metsola was elected President, the highest international post ever held by a Maltese national, in 2022. She was the first Maltese EP President and also the youngest person to serve the role.

On Wednesday, Politico highlighted that a general consensus has emerged that Ursula von der Leyen will retain her spot as European Commission President, Dr Metsola as EP President, António Costa as European Council President and Kaja Kallas as Foreign Policy Chief.

Meanwhile, other reports noted that during a conference for the political groups of Parliament, President of the EPP, Manfred Weber, reiterated that Ursula von der Leyen will be their candidate for the EU executive.

Furthermore, EUnews stated that the European People's Part (EPP) will have an official meeting on 18th June where they will vote for its candidate for President of the EP, “it will still be Roberta Metsola.”

During the 2024 MEP elections, held on 8th June, Dr Metsola was re-elected with over 87,473 votes, breaking records.
