Nationalist Party MEP Roberta Metsola has been nominated by the European Popular Party to serve as vice-president of the European Parliament.

Former vice-president, Mairead McGuinness, vacated his seat after being confirmed European Commission for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets union last month.

Following the nomination, Dr Metsola wrote on social media saying:

“For a girl from an island in the middle of the Mediterranean, this is a big moment. Thank you EPPGroup, I will not let you down.”

In total, the European Parliament has 14 vice-presidents, who may replace the president in the course of his/her duties as required. Vice-presidents are also members of the EP’s Bureau, the responsible for administrative, staff and organisational matters in Parliament.
