Business Profile
In 1975, I embarked on this journey as an entrepreneur in the construction industry, laying the foundation of the organisation’s operations in Malta. Under my leadership, AX Construction became a key player in civil engineering projects, operated a successful hard rock quarry, and introduced Malta's first modern pre-cast and pre-stressed concrete factory (GPC). In the 1980s, I led the diversification into hospitality with Sunny Coast and Malta’s largest hotel, the Suncrest Hotel. Building on this success, I expanded our hotel portfolio to include eight additional properties under the AX Hotels brand alongside Malta’s first retirement village, Hilltop Gardens.
Throughout the years, I have successfully delivered prestigious projects that have contributed to enhancing Malta’s infrastructure, including landmark restoration works, a private hospital and an award-winning portfolio of luxury hotels. I am also the promoter and one of the main shareholders of the Valletta Cruise Port and Valletta Waterfront.
Beyond business, I served as Naxxar's Mayor, where I was honoured with the award for the best Local Council. Additionally, I received an honorary knighthood by the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem and co-founded the AX Foundation. My contributions to society also include serving as a council member of a number of esteemed organisations. In 2012, I published my autobiography in the UK.
Throughout my career, I've received numerous awards, including Employer of the Year in 2016, EY Entrepreneur of the Year in 2018, and I was also a contestant for World EY Entrepreneur of the Year. I received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Malta Stock Exchange in 2021, followed by the Lifetime Achievement Award in Tourism in 2023. More recently, I received the Family Business of the Year award at the Malta Business Awards and the Company of the Year award at the Malta Stock Exchange Awards in 2025.
Today, AX Group stands as a multi-million asset corporation, encompassing construction, real estate, hospitality, healthcare and renewable energy. Our latest multi-million-euro developments include the luxurious Verdala destination and the redeveloped ODYCY Hotel and Lido. I take pride in the remarkable projects we have developed, emphasising to all my workforce that success is achieved through hard work, integrity and determination. Furthermore, I am fortunate to be supported by my two daughters, Claire and Denise, who actively lead different segments of the AX Group business.
