The Strategic Partnership Initiative is a future-focused programme designed to elevate Malta’s technological landscape via strategic collaborations that drive growth, innovation and internationalisation within the sector. Run by Tech.mt,a public-private partnership, involving the Maltese government and the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, the programme is a cornerstone of its mission to position Malta as a Tech hub. A recent conversation with Karl Gauci, Tech.mt’s Senior Business Development and Outreach Manager, offered a deeper understanding.
The Strategic Partnership Initiative provides “pro-bono strategic advice for local tech startups and students, possessing an innovative concept but lacking the knowledge or experience to move it forward”. Startups need to have been operating a Malta-based technology-driven project for less than five years. They should also convey a clear vision and need for specialised advice in digital strategy, market entry or technological innovation. Meanwhile, students should be enrolled in a relevant academic programme and display a strong interest in the tech industry and proactive approach to their professional development.
This advice is contributed by a carefully selected network of industry leaders (49 to date) that employ their wealth of experience to aid startups in “overcoming early-stage challenges and optimising their business models”. This initiative delivers invaluable support and actionable feedback for “every stage of growth, from refining ideas and strategies to expanding into global markets”.
Tech.mt continuously seeks distinguished firms from different spheres to expand the programme’s partner network. “Additionally, partners must demonstrate deep market understanding in their respective fields, a robust customer portfolio and operational viability, to meet the demands and responsibilities of the partnership agreement”.
Collaborating partners offer unbiased insight and guidance on a diverse range of consultation areas, chosen by Tech.mt to help the programme’s beneficiaries compete and seize opportunities in a digital landscape that is both challenging and changing. Key areas include validation of digital concepts and products, emerging technologies consultancy, go-to-market strategies and market dynamics assessment for product launch, internationalisation as well as marketing.
“The experiences, shared by both parties, reflect the vital role that Tech.mt has played in spearheading noticeable progress within Malta’s startup sphere. By effectively connecting these businesses with industry experts, the programme has contributed to their success and established itself as a valuable asset.”
As a result, Tech.mt is frequently recommended among startups. Furthermore, this initiative has facilitated long-term relationships between partners and start-ups while enabling partners to stay at the forefront of industry developments.
It is worth noting that primary challenges, expressed by startups, include operational scalability, market expansion, adopting emerging technologies and digital strategy. Students, meanwhile, usally seek advice on understanding and adapting to the latest technological trends and practical technology-focused career guidance. Identifying commonalities enables Tech.mt to ensure the Strategic Partnership Initiative consistently provides relevant, targeted support in the tech arena.
A number of success stories reflect the benefits this initiative offers, to mention Invent3D Ltd who saw the positive results of digital marketing strategies with BRNDWGN’s guidance. Meanwhile, Datalitiks’ business plan and overall business confidence benefited from GO Ventures' mentorship. Whilst MyMama’s SEO, digital marketing and wider strategy was significantly helped by Digital Guru, Seed and Redorange.
Looking ahead, Mr Gauci confirms that Tech.mt will use “quantitative and qualitative metrics to measure the Strategic Partnership Initiative's long-term economic impact and assess its effectiveness in addressing the needs and challenges of the local startup community”. Promotional efforts will continue via digital marketing, targeted engagement at industry events and collaboration with academic institutions and industry organisations. Continuous refinement and optimisation of the Strategic Partnership Initiative showcases Tech.mt’ s commitment to driving lasting positive change in Malta’s startup ecosystem.
