Maltese architectural firm AP Valletta has submitted an innovative proposal for an international competition to design an extension for Rome's iconic MAXXI Museum.

The proposal focuses on creating a harmonious blend of functionality, sustainability, and visual cohesion, ensuring that the new structure integrates seamlessly with both the existing museum and its surrounding landscape.

As part of the project’s unique vision, the extension is designed to sculpt and frame the views of the MAXXI Museum, especially for visitors approaching from Via Masaccio while the building’s cantilevered structure allows for unobstructed sightlines of the museum’s main façade, AP Valletta shared.

A large canopy, extending along the museum’s linear atrium, is another standout feature. This multifunctional structure will provide shade and shelter for outdoor activities, the Maltese firm added.

AP Valletta argued that the proposal further enhances the visitor experience by introducing a new public green space. This area will serve as an outdoor extension for exhibitions, creating a welcoming environment for both art enthusiasts and the local community. It added that the landscaped staircase connects the green space to a rooftop garden, offering an elevated platform for events and installations, "creating a welcoming, open space for all."
