Some of Malta’s most accomplished architects and interior designers have been recognised at the virtual Malta Architectural and Spatial Planning awards ceremony, organised by the Planning Authority.
Winners were identified in a broad variety of categories and included both established architectural firms and up-and-coming architects.
Amongst the winners was Camilleri Paris Mode Design Studio, which received the Rehabilitation and Conservation Award for its work on Villa La Fiorentina in Attard, where the firm transformed a dilapidated building into a modern home while keeping with the building’s historical character.
Chris Briffa Architects firm was awarded the Urban Design Award, for its project Casa Bottega in Valletta, which the jury identified as an excellent case study on the integration of a contemporary vertical extension into the urban fabric of Valletta.
The Public Open Spaces Award was won by Martin Xuereb & Associates for the firm’s work on the Piazzetta in Sliema, which was described as using the space to allow for a sense of calm and tranquillity in the otherwise hectic location.
DeMicoli & Associates firm was the winner of the Commercial and Public buildings Award for St Julian’s Tipico Building, which maximised the site of the formerly low-lying building to rise 13 storeys above the street level of the complex.
University student Daniela Spiteri Binnet was the winner of the Urban Planning Concept Award. Her concept project, “A Village Amidst the Landscape” presented a vision to reconnect Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq with the sea.
The President’s Award for outstanding achievement for services related to architecture and spatial planning was given posthumously to Joseph M Spiteri.
Other winners included Maurizio Ascione (Emerging Architect Award), MED Design (Sustainability Award), and 3DM Architecture with Elena Borg Constanzi (Hospitality, Tourism Accommodation & Leisure Award).
The awarding jury was comprised of a prestigious group from all over the world, including scholars, Government and NGO officials, practicing architects, and a historian.
