As Chairman of the Malta Stock Exchange, Joseph Portelli has always striven to increase participation in the local capital market. In 2024, this goal was laid out into a six-point plan to boost trading activity, with perhaps the most significant element within the plan set to be launched soon – www.investi.com.mt, a brand-new financial portal built for the Maltese investor.
“This is a very first for Malta, as a similar platform was never available,” Mr Portelli declares with clear enthusiasm. “Yes, you can find fragmentary information on Google, Yahoo Finance, or Bloomberg, but there’s nothing that brings all relevant information for a typical Malta-based investor, specifically designed with a Maltese context in mind. With www.investi.com.mt, we want to give the right tools for our investors to make the right decisions.”
Expected to launch in January 2026, the portal will provide unprecedented access to data and insights, which were previously unavailable.
“You will be able to check listed companies and their history, see ten years of data, and analyse trends,” Mr Portelli explains. “The portal will essentially do a great deal of heavy lifting for investors, which otherwise would need to be collected and collated manually, providing insights into the history of businesses, empowering Maltese investors with the tools to make educated decisions. Knowledge is power and nowhere is this power more crucial than when deciding to invest or trade.”
The website will not only offer quantitative analysis and financial indicators, the kind Mr Portelli himself insists on checking before making any investment, but it is also expected to feature articles, news updates, and educational content written by Maltese professionals who are intimate with the sector.
“We want to help people understand diversification, how best to invest, and to give them the confidence to take part in the market.”
Significantly, www.investi.com.mt will be run by the Malta Stock Exchange Institute, the Exchange’s educational arm, as a purely educational venture.
“The project is not about commercial gain,” Mr Portelli stresses, “it’s about raising financial literacy and awareness, which is increasingly crucial in today’s commercial landscape."
“By the second half of next year we plan to open up www.investi.com.mt further, allowing users to log in, input their portfolios, and follow their investments and trading performance directly, all in one convenient place. Whether you own international or local stocks, you will be able to track all from www.investi.com.mt," Mr Portelli adds.
Furthermore, to engage younger generations and entice a familiarity with the trading and investment world, the Malta Stock Exchange is also developing an innovative trading simulator championship in collaboration with the University of Malta and MCAST.
“Students will trade virtual money over a year-long league, with prizes given to the best performers," Mr Portelli explains, "this way, we can get young people excited about the markets early, as they are encouraged to learn by doing.”
“At the end of the day, we are democratising investment knowledge. We are giving Maltese investors access to information and tools that used to be difficult to obtain. A strong market is built on trust, transparency, and literacy, and with www.investi.com.mt, we’re making sure those foundations are solid,” Mr Portelli concludes.
