The Malta Employers’ Association (MEA) on Wednesday announced that Kevin J. Borg has taken over from Joseph Farrugia as Director General.

Mr Farrugia had occupied the position since 2001.

The MEA described Mr Farrugia as a “stalwart in terms of social dialogue,” who guided the association through a number of challenges and milestones, such as Malta’s accession to the European Union (EU).

Throughout his time in the position, he represented Maltese employers on a number of international for a, including the Board of Directors of the European Foundation for the Improvement in Living and Working Conditions, the European Social Fund, SGI Europe, and the International Organisation of Employers.

Mr Farrugia will continue to serve the association in the role of Consultant, primarily dealing with employment and industrial relation matters, together with the industrial tribunal.

Mr Borg steps into the role having previously served as Consultant for the association.

Throughout his career he has gained considerable experience in leadership of the business community, particularly by having occupied the role of Director General of The Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry for close to 15 years.

Mr Borg is also very well known in the maritime industry, with him presently CEO at the Malta Maritime Forum.

His experience also includes three years as Non-Executive Director at Bank of Valletta plc, and a stint working in the Ministry for Finance.

With origins dating back to 1958, the MEA acts as the constituted body that brings together employers from all sectors of industry and commerce in Malta. It aims to regulate the relations between employers, workers, and trade unions.
