Judge Prof. David Attard has been re-elected to serve on the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea.

Prof. Attard has extensive experience teaching law of the sea. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Law at the University of Malta, and has taught at numerous prestigious universities, including Yale, Oxford and Sorbonne, as well as visiting lecturer in Rome and Beijing.  

Prof Attard was re-elected to serve on the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea with the highest number of votes of all candidates.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Evarist Bartolo, as well as the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations New York congratulated Judge Prof. Attard on his appointment.

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is an independent judicial body established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

It was set up to resolve disputes arising from the interpretation and application of the Convention. Prof Attard served as its Vice-President from 2017 to 2020.
