Joseph Portelli has confirmed plans to develop a high-end luxury hotel at Fort Tigné, following MIDI plc’s promise of sale agreement for the historic site at Tigné Point, Sliema.

Speaking to WhosWho.mt, Mr Portelli said the project will involve a top-tier international hotel brand. While the hotel chain cannot yet be disclosed, he indicated that it would exceed the traditional five-star offering and introduce a concept that is currently not present in Malta.

Mr Portelli described the Fort Tigné site as one of the island’s most exceptional locations, noting that the planned development aims to fully capitalise on its unique setting while delivering a product that stands apart from existing hospitality projects.

The transaction remains subject to the fulfilment of conditions precedent, with the promise of sale valid until April 2026. Upon completion, Fort Tigné will be removed from MIDI plc’s property portfolio, with the proceeds earmarked for the redemption of the company’s €50 million bond due in July 2026.
