A photo of Joe tas-Serkin holding a larger than usual pastizz went viral on Maltese social media this morning. Posted on the group ‘Are You Being Served (Malta & Gozo) Original’, the image racked up more than a thousand likes.
The pastry rested on a normal tray which would otherwise carry multiple pastizzi, but this time, it carried a singular ricotta pastizz.
WhosWho.mt called Joe to get more information on this famous pastry. He said that he started making large pastizzi like this three years ago, when a foreign woman who comes Malta every year for her birthday orders herself a large pastizz to celebrate. “Instead of a birthday cake”, he said.
He doesn’t know exactly how much it weighs, but he said that it feeds approximatelt 25 people, and costs around €25.
