For the first time, the HSBC Malta Foundation marked Valentine’s Day with a collection drive of dog and cat food – proving that 14th February is not just for roses and chocolates, but also for four-legged companions.

Seven schools took part in the initiative: Naxxar Induction Hub, Kirkop Middle School, Dingli Secondary School, St Catherine’s School, Sacred Heart College, St Dorothy Junior School – Żebbuġ, and Żejtun Secondary School. Students and educators rallied behind the cause, contributing pet food in significant quantities.

HSBC staff from various departments also joined in, collecting both food and monetary donations. Around €455 was raised, which was then used to purchase additional supplies from local suppliers Nestlé Malta and Borg Cardona Co. Ltd – both of whom doubled the value of the purchases.

The donations have so far benefited several animal welfare organisations across Malta, including Malta SPCA, AAA Malta, The Attard Stray Animals Support Group, The Animal Alliance, RAR, CSAF, and Noah’s Ark.

Organisers expressed satisfaction with the strong response from both schools and HSBC employees, noting that the support exceeded expectations. Given the enthusiasm shown, the Foundation confirmed that the initiative is likely to be repeated in the near future.

In a week typically associated with romantic gestures, this year’s Valentine’s spirit extended to shelters and sanctuaries – with food bowls, rather than flower bouquets, taking centre stage.
