For any international hotel brand, offering a consistent guest experience is one of its most important value propositions. Yet increasingly for today’s traveller, authenticity and a bit of local flavour is often the very reason for choosing a destination in the first place. Reconciling those two expectations sits at the heart of Richard Cuello’s role as Cluster General Manager of Hilton Malta and DoubleTree by Hilton Malta, where he oversees two distinct properties under the Tumas Group portfolio.

It is a balancing act that, in his view, has become one of Hilton's greatest differentiators. “We definitely adapt to the local experience,” he says. “We communicate in the local market and offer experiences that are authentic to Malta as a destination, while respecting the brand standards our guests know and trust.”

That dual promise, Mr Cuello argues, is what has helped sustain Hilton's long-standing partnership with Tumas Group, a relationship that has endured since 1986 and expanded from the flagship Hilton Malta to the recent opening of DoubleTree by Hilton Malta. Such longevity, he believes, has been built on a shared commitment to continuous improvement rather than complacency.

“The relationship between Tumas Group and Hilton is very strong,” he says. “We have something in common in that we are always aiming for quality.” He credits Tumas Group's willingness to continually invest in its properties as the foundation of that success. “They are always investing in their assets, and that allows us to keep the quality and keep elevating our product year after year.”

If preserving each hotel's individual identity is one challenge, leading them as a unified operation is another altogether. As Cluster General Manager, Mr Cuello must strike a careful balance by maintaining the distinct positioning of Hilton Malta and DoubleTree by Hilton Malta while ensuring both properties operate strategically, efficiently and in synergy as a single portfolio.

Mr Cuello points to Hilton's global framework as providing a solid starting point. “Internationally, Hilton has over 20 brands today, and they are very clear on every brand's positioning and standards,” he explains. “These guidelines help us clearly identify each product, what we are offering to our customers, and what they can expect from each property.” That clarity was particularly important during the transformation of the former Dolmen Hotel into DoubleTree by Hilton Malta, a repositioning designed to elevate both the property and the appeal of St Paul's Bay as a destination.

The greater challenge, however, lies behind the scenes. Mr Cuello describes a cluster as “a living organisation” that is constantly evolving. While the model creates opportunities to share expertise, align operations and build stronger teams across both hotels, it also demands continual reassessment. “You constantly have to challenge the cluster,” he explains. “Do I have the right resources? Do I have the right people in the right place? I believe successful cluster management is less about centralisation than ensuring both properties remain individually strong while benefiting from a shared vision and collective expertise.”

As Malta's hospitality landscape continues to grow, with new hotels and international brands entering the market, competition has intensified across the sector. It is within this increasingly crowded environment that Hilton Malta and DoubleTree by Hilton Malta must continue to differentiate themselves and remain among the island's leading hospitality destinations.

While such a landscape might be expected to create added pressure, Mr Cuello takes a markedly different view. “I think competition is always positive, especially when it is bringing additional value to the destination. The more high-end or renowned brands you bring into the market, the more you're elevating Malta as a destination.”

Just as importantly, he says, competition discourages complacency: “It keeps you on your toes and constantly challenges you to ask yourself, ‘How can you do better? What can you offer additionally to your customers?’”

And yet, for Mr Cuello, success is never measured solely against competitors. The real benchmark is the guest experience. “It's essential to always put the customer at the centre of every activity we are doing. Ultimately, it is the customer, not the competition, who determines which brands continue to earn their loyalty.”

Beyond the increasingly competitive local market, Malta must also measure itself against some of the Mediterranean's most established tourism destinations. Here, Mr Cuello adopts a more reflective perspective. While he believes Malta has many natural strengths, he is equally convinced that the island cannot afford to stand still.

Having spent the past six years working closely with Malta's hospitality sector and tourism institutions, Mr Cuello believes there are still opportunities to enhance the overall visitor experience. “Malta is definitely competing in the right range of destination. But there are opportunities where Malta could improve the experience for travellers. It starts with things we see every day around us on the streets, but there are also more strategic, higher-level opportunities to get the best out of Malta. Quality upgrades and improving our tourism product are not a choice but a must if Malta wants to remain competitive.”

As the adage goes, if there is one constant in hospitality, it is change. “Trends are constantly in flux, so you have to keep your eyes open and stay vigilant,” he says. “Personalised service is a must today. Every customer has different expectations, and we have to adapt to those specific requirements. That means recognising what travellers are looking for. Some seek family-focused holidays, others quiet romantic escapes or luxury breaks.”

Increasingly, however, guests are looking for something more meaningful than accommodation alone. Mr Cuello explains: “Whether it’s in the food and beverage offering, in the culture, in the knowledge of our team members, guests want to take something authentic home with them. You shouldn't travel to Malta, Sardinia or anywhere else without bringing back memories that truly belong to that destination. And that’s precisely why our ambition is to continue to deliver the quality and service guests expect from Hilton, while ensuring every stay offers an authentic experience that could only happen in Malta.”
