Carlo Genovese, the host, chef and restaurateur behind Acqua Marina Restaurant in St Paul’s Bay, has passed away, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across Malta’s hospitality scene and beyond.
In a statement, the restaurant described Mr Genovese as “the heart” of Acqua Marina, remembered not only for his culinary passion but for the warmth with which he welcomed every guest. “He was a kind, hardworking person who greeted everyone with a genuine smile,” the statement read, adding that his dedication “touched so many”.
Friends, clients and industry peers have shared messages of remembrance, highlighting both his professional commitment and personal generosity. One tribute described him as “a great restaurateur, chef, host and friend… always ready to warmly greet you from the moment he sees you.”
Mediterranean Group Ltd also paid tribute, recalling Mr Genovese, affectionately known as Carletto, as “a symbol for St Paul’s Bay” whose passing leaves “a great void”. The group spoke of years of friendship and shared experiences, describing him as “a safe harbour”.
The restaurant has announced it will remain closed until further notice as the team takes time to grieve.
Mr Genovese's passing marks the loss of a well-known and much-loved figure in Malta’s dining scene, particularly within the north of the island, where Acqua Marina had built a loyal following over the years.
