BCRS Malta is turning two years old and to celebrate this milestone, on 16th November, it will hold an open day where the public can discover what happens after one drops their plastic bottle or aluminium can into the reverse vending machines.

The BCRS initiative, operated by BCRS Ltd, incentivises the return of single-use beverage containers by applying a refund of €0.10 deposit on the sale of beverages. Consumers and businesses can then regain their deposit by returning the empty container to one of the company’s reverse vending machines.

Despite being an overall successful initiative, it did come with some hiccups. While short-term issues like long queues, and out-of-order vending machines were tackled, businesses in the catering industry flagged concerns about having to allocate a lot of space for recycling purposes.

Now, the public can get a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes after the bottles and cans are recycled and a voucher is issued.

The event will take place at the BCRS Malta Recycling Facility in Ħal Far and “is a great opportunity for the public to see first-hand how beverage containers are collected, sorted, and prepared for export.”

No registration is needed, and the entrance is free, from 10am to 5pm.

On the day, visitors will get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how the recycling sorting process works, giving them a chance to see how their efforts are being championed through this scheme. Visitors of all ages will have the chance to explore the facility through guided tours, where they can follow the journey of a beverage container from the moment it's deposited to when it's baled and ready for export.

Along the way, they’ll learn how the deposit return scheme system is helping Malta reduce littered waste and promote a circular economy.

Children can get hands-on with creative recycling workshops, where they’ll learn how everyday items can be repurposed into something new, and participate in games that encourage proper recycling habits. There will also be live demonstrations showing how the different types of materials – plastic, aluminium, and glass – are processed.

To create a vibrant atmosphere, the event will feature a variety of entertainment for all ages. Highlights include a special appearance from the BCRS recycling mascot, an engaging puppet, magic and bubble shows for kids, and an inflatable fun park complete with a bouncy balloon house.

Families can also enjoy visits from popular kids’ character mascots and photo opportunities with collection trucks and food stalls. With plenty of activities for everyone, the event promises to be both informative and enjoyable, keeping guests engaged throughout the day.
